But the beautiful capital is not the only destination; the water park of Agios Ioannis, the evocative monasteries of Vlacherna e Paleokastritsa, Paleopolis, the Church of Saint Spiridon ...

CORFU TOWN

Visit Corfu

Kerkyra, with its suburbs and its immediate surroundings is one of the main tourist destinations for visiting Corfu and all of Greece. City of Venetian style and of undoubted beauty, which, we are sure, will enchant you immediately; especially in its old part, probably one of the most fascinating jewels of modern Greece; a city that preserves, intact, the charm of past times, with its paved streets, ancient buildings, the two ancient fortresses and the historic walls that surround it; a city to live, with its taverns where you can savor the typical cuisine, the cafes and bars where you can spend some time sipping a drink, and the air and the scent of sea that pervades every corner; a city to discover at any time of the day: during the day, in the late afternoon with the light of the sunset that makes it even more magical, or at night, all lit up.

Kerkyra, whose historic center has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site; right here, you'll have a lot to see; starting from Campiello, the district whose name gives a rather good idea of the Venetian legacy on the city. It is an agglomeration of narrow alleyways and tall buildings, between old cellars, paved squares, hidden courtyards and even a suggestive Venetian well.

Holy Spiridone Corfu

spianada, is the real pulsating heart of the city; It is a large square corresponding to the Piazza d'Armi of the Venetian era, today the site of parades and numerous events and events. Here are held concerts of the Philharmonic, the parade of carnival masks, games of cricket, and more.
Walking through busts and corfiote statues, one encounters the splendid Palazzo Listòn, the most famous of the buildings that overlook the spianada, with the arcades that welcome, today, many bars and restaurants. The historic palace was erected between 1807 and 1814 by Fernando Lesseps, father of the engineer who opened the Suez Canal; it was built on the model of the buildings overlooking the famous Rue de Rivoli in Paris. The northern side of Spianáda is closed by Palea Anáktora, or Vecchia Reggia; it is a building, first seat of the British governor of the Ionian islands, and subsequently the residence of the sovereigns up to 1913.

In the historic center, the splendid is not to be missed Agios Spiridona, 16th century Orthodox church; it is dedicated to the cult of San Spiridone, the local patron saint, whose relics are kept in the building and carried in 4 procession times a year. Beautiful church, small and collected, with paintings and frescoes, and a beautiful bell tower (see photo above). Not to be missed while visiting Corfu.
Paleo e Neo Froúrio, respectively Antico and Nuovo Forte, are the two fortresses, which act as sentinels to the city. Built in the Byzantine era, and enlarged during the period of Venetian domination, Paléo Froúrio is the ancient fortress on the hill overlooking the sea, overlooking the Spianáda. In summer, it is advisable to venture out in the afternoon, after particularly hot hours; a strenuous climb awaits you, walking among the steps. Arm yourself with a lot of patience, especially if you were in the company of children. The fatigue, however, is valid when you are at the top, where a cross is placed, from which you will enjoy an unrepeatable panorama. The entrance fee costs 4,00 € and is free for children.
Neo Froúrio it is the New Forte Fortress of San Marco built by the Venetians in the 1576 and enlarged in the nineteenth century by the English and the French. It presents two interesting entrance portals.

Palais Sissi

About a quarter of an hour away, Achilleon (photo) is to be considered almost a mandatory stop for those visiting the island. This is the beautiful nineteenth century Palace, built by the will of Queen Elizabeth of Austria, which later became, for a short period, the residence of Princess Sissi (for this reason it is also known as Sissi's Palace).

Beautiful exterior, with a beautiful garden, the statue of Achilles, and a wonderful view, while the interior leaves rather to be desired, including the (presumed) bedroom of Elizabeth, rather bare. Overall, however, we still feel to recommend a visit to the structure.
The entrance ticket is 8 euro for adults, but for families there is to take advantage of the excellent offer to 15 euro total (we have entered with our children 3). An audio guide is included in the price. For more information, we invite you to consult the official website from this link.

Contrary to what one might think, the strong point for which it is worth getting here (a long and endless winding road) is the view is the view of the island: wonderful! Do not miss it when visiting Corfu. The structure closes at 17: 00, and the price for the visit is 2,00 €. From the administrative capital, to arrive, follow the signs to Paleokastritsa.

The throne of the Emperor from which to admire the whole island, is located in a context and an absolutely unique scenario. Kaiser's Throne, in the past, it was the observatory where Emperor William II loved to retire to meditate, enjoying the tranquility and peace that only this place was able to offer.
Located in the small village of Pelekas, on a hill at 270 meters high, today is an idyllic place where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the island, with the sea visible from both coasts; and, above all, you will be stunned by marvelous sunsets, with the sun going to fall right in the middle of the two mountains in the western part of the site. Pelekas, is located less than 15 km west of the capital.

Paleopolis is an archaeological site surrounded by ancient walls where there are some ruins and historical buildings of the first settlement of the city of Kerkyra, founded by the Corinthians in the seventh century. Ac It is really a beautiful walk in the shade of olive trees, quite relaxing, in peace and tranquility, air permitting: the site, in fact, is located near the airport, a few kilometers south of the center of Corfu, in the peninsula of Kanoni. Along the way there are several buildings including the Monastery of Santa Eufemia, the open theater, the Congress Center, Palazzo Tito, a post-Byzantine church, and especially, the ruins of a splendid Paleochristian Basilica, dating back to 450 and a small Doric temple known as Kardakio dedicated to Poseidon or perhaps to Aesculapius. Entry to the site is FREE, Except for MON REPOS, a neoclassical villa built in 1826 by the English governor Frederick Adam for his summer holidays, can be visited by 15: 00 for a fee.

PANTOKRATOR MOUNT

The highest point of the island, about 900 meters in height, located north-east of Corfu Town. It can be reached by passing through Ipsos before the intersection with the panoramic route for Men, and then with an uphill road, where you pass through small villages. Getting to the top is not really easy: a winding road full of bends, gravel, and with significant slopes, especially in the last stretch; it is, in any case, really unmissable for all those who come to the island, with a wonderful view at 360 degrees. Recommended especially before sunset, for the magic that can give. On the mountain you can also visit the Monastery of the same name, a small Orthodox church in a truly suggestive position. The landscape is only clouded in beauty by the presence of antennas and repeaters. A must for visiting Corfu.

Pontikonissi

Corfu Pontikonissi

Pontikonissi, literally is the little island, and is one of the most photographed places on the island; a tiny island, reachable from the center by taking the promenade, avenue Leoforos Dimocratias, until you reach the end of the peninsula that borders the lagoon of Halikiopoulo; a narrow jetty connects the mainland to this small island in which stands out, the small, evocative monastery of Vlacherna, with the dominant white. It is really impressive.

Good visit Corfu.
