Everything about the Walpurgis Night of 30 April 2019, in Harz, Germany

DATA: April 30 2019
PLACE: Braunlage / Schierke, Germany

See the crowds, the collision, the shuffling that they do. And they scream and moan and chirp and buzz and boil; and they shine and sparkle, and puton and blaze! Oh, the great madman!
[Mefistofele in Faust I, Goethe]

Immense bonfire. Burnings and witches. Devilish people praising Satan ...
Between mysticism and paganism, a sort of Halloween at the extreme, celebrated in Saxony, and, in particular, in the Harz region.

La Notte di Valpurga is an extraordinary event that has its roots in the pre-Christian period, in a sort of middle way between propitiatory rites and celebrations of the Spring.

On the night of the April 30, witches danced around large bonfires on Mount Blocksberg.
Plenty were invoked in the harvest. Fertility. Prosperity. Often, through esoteric ceremonies.
Then, with different facets, the rituals spread everywhere. Not just in Germany.

Today, do not expect any witch-hunts, but an extraordinary European event in which you dance, laugh and go wild for an entire night. Young and old. Children and adults. Between large fires. Witches, devils and extravagant disguises. Artists, jugglers and fire eaters, which will make your experience truly unforgettable!

The night of Walpurgis is celebrated practically throughout Germany. However, the real focus of the festivities takes place in the Harz region and in the villages of Bad Grund, Braunlage, Hahnenklee, Sankt Andreasberg, Schierke and Thale.
The best way to reach the region is by train or by car. For medium to long-haul distances, we recommend using the plane. Hannover and Leipzig are the two nearest international airports. The distance, from both, is about 150km.

Close up for Schierke am Brocken, thanks to a billboard of the highest level is a fantastic medieval show. Guaranteed fun between jugglers, dancers, Vikings and knights. In addition, master craftsmen, street artists, musicians and taverns await you in a mix of lights, colors and flavors that will take you back to a distant time.

The day 29 / 04, at the Thermal Park, meeting with Cellart, Cobblestones, and The Drunken Donkeys.
The 30 April, until late evening, big party, and unique scenographies, at Schierker Feuerstein Arena, near the spa gardens. A big stage will be set up and a dance floor. Headlining the evening will be the Feuerschwanz, a German band that is depopulating around here.
Great closure with a fireworks display.

Do not miss the show of the Walpurgis Night of Braunlage, the 30 April. Ample space, and events, dedicated to children. In various parts of the city, you will find artists and make-up artists ready to create scary masks.
At 18: 00, in the streets of the center, a parade awaits you with shady individuals and strange figures.
At 19: 00, on the other hand, children can cheer with Walpurgispiel in the city park. Here, in the evening, concerts and shows on the big stage.
And, again, fireworks and lots of food and gastronomy.
Not to be missed.
